Wimbledon Adopts Video Replay System for the First Time.

Wimbledon court with video review technology

Wimbledon will follow the US and Aussie Opens in employing video review technology.

Replay systems will make its debut at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Athletes are granted the option to contest certain rulings made by the chair umpire, echoing the practice already in operation at both the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

This technology will be accessible on the main stadium and the number one court throughout the tournament and on the remaining featured courts when they are staging singles contests.

This step arrives only a season following the All England Club introduced electronic line calling, which effectively ended the longstanding tradition of line judges.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Competitors cannot to challenge the call of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to ask for the umpire to review specific decisions, including:

  • If a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • If a shot made contact with an opponent's racquet or person during play.
  • Possible interference end of a rally.

Importantly, there is no limit on the amount of reviews a competitor can request.

Practical Application

An illustrative example occurred in Indian Wells recently, where a top player used the video challenge against his opponent.

The British player admitted it was a tough situation for the official, but thought his opponent had "used the regulations effectively."

The umpire watched a replay and determined Draper was responsible for interference, awarding the point to his opponent.

Growing Trend

This technology aren't new for Grand Slams. It has been in use at the American major for two years and the Australian Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour will have video reviews in place at every one of its events.

Additional Innovations

Another innovation at The Championships 2025 involves the addition of graphical cues on displays to support the audio calls from the ELC system.

This solves instances where fans have sometimes been unsure whether a shot was in or out.

Finally, with exactly a century of days to go until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have also revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
