Here's a challenge for long-term couples who enjoy horror films: Sit down with your partner and view Together. This independent film success of 2025 has now made its launch on a streaming platform on the Hulu service. At first glance, it could look like conventional physical horror, but inside Together lies a deep contemplation about how we choose to love our partners.
A Directorial Debut Exploring Partnership Complexities
Together is the introductory feature for director Michael Shanks. It showcases the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Millie and Tim, a pair who are not married that have stayed together for over ten years. Having wed in reality in 2017, Franco and Brie contribute a special spark to their portrayals, skillfully embodying both the good and bad of a committed partnership.
The plot commences when Tim and Millie relocate from the metropolis to the countryside for Millie’s job. A somewhat stereotypical plot device, of course, but that’s primarily where the conventions conclude. Together transforms into as much a psychological exploration of the couple's dynamic as it is a body horror flick.
A Paranormal Spark
While hiking near their new home, a violent storm occurs, and the two fall into an underground cave. After being trapped overnight there and eventually escaping, a supernatural entity takes hold of the couple. This force compels a supernatural closeness between them that goes exceeding simple connection.
The whole movie is a slow burn of scares, interspersing moments of hallucinatory nightmares, gross (but not excessively graphic) physical transformations, and surprisingly comedic dialogue (sometimes during something horrific). Shanks orchestrates these parts seamlessly and wraps them up in a gradually swelling aura of dread.
Nuanced Portrayals
A great deal of Together is exclusively Brie and Franco, and they skillfully illustrate countless layers to the partnership at the film's core. Her self-assurance and feeling of intimacy is waning due to a distance. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his hesitance to focus on anything other than his struggling artistic pursuits inexorably rises.
In contrast, Tim's character experiences isolation and separated by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve relocated rural and far away from his network of friends. He is terrified of the concept of totally forfeiting his personal autonomy in Millie. This fear is amplified by the reality he does not operate a vehicle and is dependent on Millie for mobility.
The film's most intelligent aspect is that he avoids making Tim or Millie the obvious villain.
Tim and Millie grapple with the sort of issues that arise in most partnerships a decade in. Deep down, they still love each other. They find humor with each other, provide solace, and are vulnerable at times. But under the surface, there’s an inescapable current of uncertainty about their bond.
Allegory and Meaning
While the supernatural forces in Together represent these fears of excessive reliance and totally devoting oneself to another person, the symbolism never feels clumsy or self-important. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments provide a ideal counterpart to the character-driven drama. Both the frights and the fights serve the other in harmony.
A Debated Finale
Together’s conclusion, which is best experienced firsthand, has left audiences divided on the movie's final takeaway about unhealthy partnerships. It has been said that single viewers have interpreted the film as a strong argument for staying single. Conversely, certain partners who were in conflict found that the film actually helped them resolve their issues.
Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own reaction could act as a telling indicator of how you perceive partnership. Will the conclusion plant feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you see yourself in either protagonist and scream at your TV, or simply turn to your other half and state, “I understand that choice”?
No matter your reaction, Together is an experiment you can experience at this very moment.
Together is streaming on the streaming service Hulu as of this moment.
