Patients Stopping Anti-Obesity Jabs Put On Weight Four Times Faster Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management often requires ongoing approaches.

New research reveals that individuals who stop using popular weight-loss injections like semaglutide or tirzepatide tend to recover reduced body mass much more quickly than those who stop conventional lifestyle plans.

Findings released in a prominent medical journal demonstrates that while obese individuals often shed substantial amounts of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"People purchasing these drugs should be cognizant of the danger of fast weight regain when the medication ends," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain means a reversion to pre-treatment weight within about one and a half years.

Comparing Treatments

The research, which reviewed 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the outcomes of the injectable medications with other pills.

Researchers point out that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone usually have a slower creep back—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

Understanding the Rapid Rebound

Doctors propose the way of the jabs accounts for the heightened rebound.

The injections imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates hunger.

"Artificially providing the hormone levels several times higher than normal might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and may also lessen sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' means hunger is no longer kept in check, making overeating a significant risk."

An Ongoing Disease?

Health authorities advise the jabs for people with weight-linked health risks, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.

Professionals say that, considering the significant potential of relapse, the therapy should be considered long-term.

This perspective is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "emphasize the long-term character of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

User Experiences

Users who have discontinued the jabs report a powerful resurgence of cravings.

"It felt as if a switch flipping and you're instantly starving," said a patient.

This challenge is worsened if users have not developed permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.

Significant Use

Recent estimates indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with demand continuing to grow.

  • Use is greater among females compared to men.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
  • Many obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

In conclusion, researchers caution that while the jabs are potent agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic fix and maintained weight loss likely depends on ongoing behavioural support.
